About the prostate

Print this page

The prostate gland is located just below the bladder, but it's actually not part of the urinary system. It’s part of the reproductive system, and its function is to produce fluid for semen.

In healthy males, the prostate grows rapidly during puberty, then remains basically the same size for 20 years or more. At about age 40, men experience normal hormonal changes, which cause the prostate to start growing once again. And for many men, it eventually becomes enlarged.

As you can see, an enlarged prostate has a tendency to increase pressure on the urethra, and can result in the symptoms associated with BPH.

Important Safety Information
Only your doctor can tell if you have BPH, not a more serious condition like prostate cancer. Avoid driving or hazardous tasks for 12 hours after your first dose or increase in dose, as a sudden drop in blood pressure may occur, rarely resulting in fainting. If considering cataract surgery, tell your eye surgeon you’ve taken FLOMAX. Common side effects are runny nose, dizziness and decrease in semen.

Before taking FLOMAX capsules, please see the full Prescribing Information and Patient Information.
